Minimally invasive laser spine surgery is an effective alternative to open back or neck surgery for many painful conditions affecting the spine such as degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, herniated discs and sciatica.  

Unfortunately, minimally invasive and laser spine surgery are not commonly performed in the United States due to a steep learning curve and expense. In experienced hands, laser spine surgery is very effective in decompressing painful discs that would otherwise require either a fusion or disc replacement to obtain relief. These laser spine surgery alternatives to spinal fusion and disc replacement are performed on an out-patient basis because post-operative pain in minimal.

We use laser spine surgery for the treatment of spinal stenosis, herniated discs, bulging discs, sciatica, facet arthritis, bone spurs, painful discs in the neck, back and lower back as well as many other conditions of the spine.

The LASER

LASER is an acronym for, Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

The Holmium:YAG (Ho:YAG) laser is perhaps the most versatile laser used in medicine today. The unique ability of the laser to vaporize tissues & extremely hard materials (such as bone spurs) has made it the laser of choice for laser spine surgeons worldwide.

The small size of the laser fibers and relatively low depth of thermal penetration of the laser energy means that adjacent structures are not affected, providing for safe, effective treatment in even the tightest of spaces.

Whether it is for herniated disc treatment, spinal stenosis relief, sciatica or other spinal conditions, laser spine surgery can provide relief in as little as one hour for most patients.

Benefits/Limitations

The laser has many benefits: effective tissue removal without adjacent tissue damage, limited blood loss, removal of bone spurs and the ability to access very tight spaces.

It offers a wide variety of tissue effects ranging from shrinkage of tissue to complete removal. No other surgical tool offers these benefits.

The laser does require careful placement adjacent to the tissue being treated. Therefore, it is frequently used in combination with imaging techniques such as spinal endoscopy or arthroscopic spine surgery.

In combination with endoscopic or arthroscopic imaging, laser spine surgery is the most cutting-edge technology available today for the out-patient treatment of herniated discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative discs and sciatica.
