Adolescent Spine Procedures
Minimally Invasive Spine Procedures for Adolescents and Children with Back Pain and Sciatica.
Probably nothing is more painful for a parent than watching our children suffer. There are numerous conditions of the growing spine that may result in chronic pain. Most mechanical causes will resolve spontaneously or with physical therapy and do not require any surgery.
For spine problems not responsive to conventional therapies, we can provide compassionate, minimally invasive solutions.
The program begins with a diagnostic work-up close to home by a local interventional pain specialist. Once the source of pain has been identified, a teleconference is scheduled with the parents to review all treatment options.
Intractable Back Pain
The incidence of a herniated disc in adolescent children is ~ 3% with the average of age of 14.5 years. Boys are 2-3 times more likely than girls to have a herniated disc and about half of these children have a parent with a history of a herniated disc.
Fortunately, results of disc removal in children are similar to adults.
However, back pain in children has many causes:
- Mechanical lower back pain
- Spondylolysis
- Disc degeneration
- Herniated disc
- Apophyseal avulsion
- Discitis
- Spinal stenosis
- Scoliosis Pain
- Pinched Nerves
Minimally Invasive Treatments
Many of the minimally invasive techniques utilized for adults can be used to treat back pain in children but the growing spine presents challenges not present in the mature adult spine.
At CELLING TREATMENT CENTERS, we specialize in treating spine problems in children of all ages using minimally invasive techniques designed to protect the growing regions of the spine and treat the source of back pain in children.
