Stem Cell Treatment for Cartilage Damage of the Knee
Stem Cell Treatment for Cartilage Damage of the Knee and Treatment of Joint Arthritis Pain
Introduction
Cartilage damage is a painful condition that affects the knee joint and other joints of the body. It is usually the result of trauma, sports or a fall. The cartilage damage can result in joint pain and swelling.
Most cases of cartilage damage that result in pain and swelling usually resolve without the need for surgery. However, cartilage damage may cause persistent pain and/or additional wear on the remaining knee surface(s) leading to early painful arthritis.
For some patients, an injection of a corticosteroid directly into the joint as well as activity modification and protected weight-bearing may be required to resolve the pain and swelling.
Most patients who do not respond to one of the above conventional treatments may require surgery.
Celling Treatment Center Procedure
Celling Treatment Centers' cartilage damage treatment differs from conventional medical treatment because it is a drug-free alternative treatment focused on treating the physical effects of the disease in order to improve patient quality of life.
The treatment focuses on reducing the symptoms and chronic effects of the cartilage ddamage by either a direct injection of concentrated stem cells into the damaged knee or an arthroscopic debridement and stem cell implantation BioKnee (see BioSurgery) procedure. The mechanism of action for stem cell therapy in is not fully understood but is believed to be due to stem cells' ability to down-regulate inflammation and promote tissue healing through regeneration.
This outpatient procedure requires patients to stay in Austin, Texas for 2 or 3 nights.
Treatment process: bone marrow harvesting, stem cell processing and stem cell implantation.
Bone Marrow Harvesting
For patient comfort, bone marrow harvesting is performed under light sedation and local anesthesia. There is a mild amount of local discomfort after the procedure that will resolve naturally.
Harvesting of the bone marrow takes approximately 20 minutes.
Stem Cell Processing
After the bone marrow is collected, the stem cell processing begins in the operating room using advanced bone marrow processing technology.
Upon completion of the stem cell processing, they are readied for immediate implantation. These living stem cells are capable of down-regulating inflammation and repairing damaged tissue caused by aging, injury or disease.
Stem Cell Implantation
Once the stem cells are prepared for implantation they are implanted into the patient using a knee arthrocentesis technique.
Using this arthrocentesis technique, a small needle is inserted into the knee in the area of the cartilage damage and the concentrated stem cells are directly implanted under x-ray guidance.
The patient is then transported to the recovery room and later discharged. The direct knee arthrocentesis procedure is not typically painful.
For those patients electing for the BioKnee procedure, the advanced arthroscopic laser debridement procedure is followed by injection of stem cells into the cartilage defect under the direct vision of the arthroscope.
Following Treatment
Patients treated for arthrocentesis are required to stay in town for a few days after the procedure. Patients are then encouraged to return home to continue conventional treatment under the care of their physician or physical therapist.
For those undergoing the BioKnee procedure, non-weight bearing on crutches is required for several weeks.
Results
Most patients treated with stem cell therapy for cartilage damage require only a single application to obtain relief.
No long term studies are available for this innovative procedure.
Cost
Cartilage damage treatment with stem cell implantation via arthrocentesis: $2,495 U.S. Dollars
Cartilage damage treatment with BioKnee procedure and stem cell implantation: $6,995 U.S. Dollars
